Descaling: why your coffee machine needs it

Limescale is the most common reason a coffee machine becomes slow, the coffee cooler and the machine starts showing errors.

Minerals in the water slowly build up in the machine’s boiler, pipes and valves. The harder the water and the more coffee you make, the faster this happens.

Signs it is time to descale

  • the machine shows a descaling message

  • coffee runs slowly or drips

  • the coffee is not hot enough

  • the milk frother is weaker than before

How to descale

Most automatic machines have a descaling programme — follow the maker’s instructions and use a descaler made for coffee machines. Vinegar and other home remedies can damage the seals.

You will find descaling powder, cleaning tablets and milk system cleaners under Coffee machine care products.

If the machine is already badly scaled

If the descaling programme no longer helps, bring the machine to our service centre. Descaling costs €35 and diagnostics €30. Book a repair.
